Examples
This page will be regularly updated to show some examples of Peter Chater's etchings, which were created using a laser engraving machine to make the plates. These examples show a variety of source material, including digital drawings, scanned drawings, and photographs.
When the plate is hand-wiped and printed, it results in a unique texture and feel, complete with an embossment of the paper. Although some detail is lost in the more subtle tones, the laser technique can produce greys and deep blacks that would otherwise require aquatint in traditional etching. The grey background to the prints is ‘plate tone’, and it is deliberately left as it gives the print a natural border. With careful wiping, plate tone can be removed almost completely—this is a personal choice of the artist.
